Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 15: Police today arrested many employees of Urban Local Bodies department after they tried to march towards the city centre in support of their demands. The employees raised slogans in support of their demands.
Reports said that scores of employees of the ULB department today appeared at the Press Enclave and started carrying out protest demonstration in support of their demands. The protesting employees were raising slogans in support of their demands and were carrying banner as well as placards.
Addressing the employees, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori, President Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) said that although the state government has been made aware about the pending demands of urban local bodies employees no action whatsoever has been taken so far to fulfill these demands.
'It is our demand that the incumbent Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir is removed at the earliest since his attitude has always been anti-employee. Such a person should be appointed as Director who knows the things well and has the capacity to solve the genuine problems being faced by the employees of the department," said Manzoor.
Listing the demands the ULBEUF President said that immediate orders should be issued with regards to the release of 14 percent arrears on account of Dearness Allowance (DA). He said the daily wagers of the department should be paid the wages without any further delay. He demanded constitution of state level and divisional level Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) in the department.
"Over the years it has been observed that class IV employees are being transferred in the department on the recommendations of politicians and bureaucrats. This needs to be stopped at the earliest. General Provident Fund (GPF) cases of many employees in the department have not been settled for long now and necessary corrections should be made in this regard," said Manzoor.
The protesting employees vowed to carry forward the agitation with more vigour in case the demands are not met by the government at the earliest. They urged the chief minister, minister for housing & urban development and chief secretary to intervene in the matter and take necessary measures to fulfill the demands of employees of urban local bodies.
The agitating employees tried to carry out a march and move towards the city centre in order to press for their demands. However, the police personnel present there swung into action and arrested many of the protesters and lodged them in nearby police station. President ULBEUF was among the arrested employees.
