Governor concerned over rising corruption | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report srinagar, March 15: Governor N N Vohra has expressed concern over the mounting corruption in Jammu and Kashmir, while the government seems least bothered to take any immediate measures. Sources said that the Governor has expressed concern and written to state government several times to take stricter measures to check corruption in the state. Governor NN Vohra has directed the authorities to take immediate measures to conclude enquiries pending with the vigilance organization against the officers of state. For years, corruption related enquiries remain pending for disposal with vigilance officers of government departments in the state. Around 9,000 corruption related enquiries are pending for the last 10-years with vigilance officers of government departments in the state. The departmental vigilance officers were directed several times by the government to adopt a "multi dimensional approach" to check allegations of corruption against government officials. However, most of the times, they either take years to complete the investigations or enquiries remain unresolved. "Governor is not happy with their work. They have been told to complete the investigations at fast track basis without any delay or they may face action," an official said. He does not want sensitive posting to be given to any tainted official in the state. "For the last few years, several officials who are facing corruption charges have been given prize postings," the official said. In 2015, late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed affirmed its commitment to bring transparency and accountability in the state administration when he removed tainted officials and non-performing bureaucrats from the plum postings, who were awarded prime postings by the previous regime. "But there are several officials who have been given top posts in the state," sources said. Since 2015, the SVC has made several recommendations to the government for strengthening the system of internal vigilance in its departments. However, in its annual report, the SVC says that the recommendations made by it are still "awaiting implementation" by the government. The SVC has received most of the complaints in the past against departments having large public dealing. In these departments, the report says there is a general feeling among people that the officials there are "most corrupt". The departments were also told to provide complete information on their websites regarding the laws, rules and procedures governing the issue of licenses, permissions, clearances, and certificates, which they have ignored so far, as per the report. |
