SKUAST-J Organizes Pre-Kharif Workshop

doda, Mar 23: Pre-Kharif Workshop cum Agricultural Officers' Training and Visit Meeting was organized by SKUAST-J in the Office of the Chief Horticulture Officer Doda, wherein its resource persons and the officers and field functionaries of departments of Agriculture and Horticulture of Doda district, participated.
Dr. Mahital Jamwal, Senior Scientist and Head of Regional Horticultural Research Station Bhaderwah and Coordinator of the workshop along with the team of scientists of SKUAST-J interacted with the participants and discussed the practices to be adopted in agricultural and horticultural farms of the region during the upcoming Kharif season.
Dr. Jamwal during the workshop elaborated strategies for hi-tech horticulture, planning and establishment of new orchards and fruit plant nurseries, maintenance of existing orchards, high density planting of orchards and organic fruit production in the region.
Dr. Ravneet Kour, Head KVK Doda, discussed cultural practices for vegetable and floricultural crops of the Kharif season and suggested several improved varieties for vegetable production in the region. Dr. Neeraj Kotwal suggested different cultural practices for button mushroom and apiculture in the region. He suggested preventive measures for walnut weevil, wooly aphid and different weeds in the farms. Dr. Manoj K Sharma emphasized for judicious use of inorganic fertilizers and chemicals on the crops and suggested integrated nutrient management for optimum crop production in the fields. He stressed for creating awareness among farmers for soil testing to maintain good soil health.
Dr. Rohit Sharma in the workshop discussed important cultural practices required for crops of Kharif season and stressed for purification of rajmash seeds to improve its quality and attract better market. He also suggested establishment of low cost vermi-compost units in the farmer fields and suggested development of integrated farming system models in the region for economic security of farmers. Sh. Madan Lal Tak, Chief Horticulture Officer Doda appreciated the role of SKUAST-J for updating the officers and field functionaries of the line departments and giving advisory to the field problems of the farmers from time to time, and extended a vote of thanks.
