Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 23: situation in Jammu is deteriorating with each passing moment. A strong wave of unrest and anger has gripped almost the whole of area which the BJP represents in the assembly.
Jammu witnessed five major developments on Wednesday and Thursday. All suggested that the patience of the people of Jammu had almost ended, that anything could happen anytime in Jammu province and that the BJP was passing through a very critical stage, as almost all those who participated in the six events had targeted the BJP.
The developments include (1) Lawyers of Kathua targetted car of the Crime Branch; (2) outraged people of Hiranagar held strong protests on the national highway demanding CBI probe in the alleged Kathua murder case; (3) people of RS Pura and Akhnoor demanded district status for their respective tehsils; (4) J&K HC Bar Association, Jammu, members suspended work for the whole day demanding deportation of Rohingyas from Jammu, CBI probe in the Kathua murder case, withdrawal of highly controversial minutes of the Tribal Affairs Department and withdrawal of the directions of the state government to the concerned revenue and police officials to allow land grabbing in Jammu as well as bovine smuggling and expressing solidarity with the agitating people of Sunderbani-Kalakot-Nowshera; (5) and a massive demonstration took place at Nowshera with police putting in all efforts to fail it and a young boy sprinkled petrol on his body at Nowshera to burn himself alive. Timely intervention saved his life.
These were not ordinary events and developments. As if all this was not enough, the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) and the Sikh United Front of Jammu & Kashmir (SUFJK) also took the plunge to express solidarity with the struggling people of Sunderbani-Kalakot-Nowshera.
CCI president Rakesh Gupta reached out to the people of Kalakot and Nowshera on Thursday and assured them his full support. "The CCI Jammu has given 72 hours ultimatum to government to announce post of ADDC for Nowshera, otherwise Jammu will join agitation," Rakesh Gupta said. He also appealed to the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry to support the ongoing agitation in Sunderbani-Kalakot-Nowshera area of Rajouri district.
On the other hand, the SUFJK threatened to create a 2008-like situation in Jammu. It asked the state government to "accept their (people of Sunderbani-Kalakot-Nowshera) demand or this agitation may turn into something like Amarnath Land Agitation," the SUFJK said.
Time is running out and running out very fast. It would be only desirable if the BJP asserted its authority and position and got the demands of the people of Jammu accepted.
