Why State Govt didn't wait for PM Modi to inaugurate Srinagar flyover | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 12: With Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti having inaugurated the "phase one" of the longest flyover in Kashmir just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to the state, why didn't the government wait for around a week more for the PM to do the honors. This question is doing the rounds in the political circles of Jammu and Kashmir with many saying that the Peoples Democratic Party led coalition where the Bharatiya Janta Party is ally, should have got the inauguration done by Modi. "What better could it have been than to get the landmark dedicated to the people by the Prime Minister because this flyover happens to be one of the most prestigious infrastructure developments projects ever undertaken in the summer capital," said a political analyst. Sources said some of the leaders from the PDP and the BJP have already been asking this question that why not to have waited for a few more days for the inauguration. Sources said many of the senior officials in the Civil Secretariat were of the opinion that if the flyover couldn't be inaugurated ahead of the reopening of the durbar Move offices in the summer capital, a few more days of wait could have made the inauguration more historic. "Usually when such a big development is expected ahead of such a high profile visit of the Prime Minister, the home state prefers to cash the opportunity through inauguration by the visiting dignitary," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. The Prime Minister is likely to visit Jammu and Kashmir for two days on May 19 to inaugurate a hydroelectricity project and to participate in the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of Ladakhi spiritual leader Kushak Bakula, as also attend a university convocation, according to officials. The 330-MW Kishanganga hydroelectric project, whose progress was monitored by the Prime Minister's Office, is located at Bandipora in north Kashmir. It envisages diversion of the water of Kishanganga river to underground powerhouse through a 23.25-km tunnel to generate 1713 million units per annum. Later in the day, Modi is expected to fly to Leh, where he is likely to participate in the 100th anniversary celebrations of Kushak Bakula, officials said. The next day, Modi is likely to address a university convocation in Jammu, officials said. Observers said it was high time for the state government to have got the inauguration of the flyover done by Modi. Despite repeated attempts the concerned couldn't be contacted for comments. |
