3 militants killed in Handwara | Operation underway | | Mohammad Sarfaraz

KUPWARA, May 18: Army on Friday claimed to have killed three militants in a gunfight at Brinjal forest area of Vilgam, Handwara in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. A top army official said that soldiers of 15 RR intercepted a group of militants believed to be infiltrators at Brinjal forest adjacent to Shahnagar Jat Gali, around 7 kilometers away from Tehsil headquarter Vilgam in Handwara area. "The group of militants opened fire upon the forces which were retaliated by the troops triggering a gunfight, the army official said. The official said that the militants fired indiscriminately and in the gunfight that ensued, three infiltrators were gunned down. "We are ascertaining their outfit affiliation, adding the operation is still going on, as there could be a chance of few more infiltrators in the area, the official told ET. He further said that this is the first infiltration bid foiled by army in Kupwara district during the month of Ramzan. However sources said that, there was a group of 3-5 heavily armed militants in the forests of Vilgam area from yesterday night, it seems that they had crossed few days back. Meanwhile in another militancy related incident, suspected militants attacked an army party at Hajin area of North Kashmir's Bandipora district today morning. Sources said that militants attacked 13RR patrolling party in Hajin Bonikhan Mohlla and Mir Mohlla area of Bandipora district. However, there was no report of any casualty from either side, said a police official. |
