SRINAGAR, May 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that decision to announce unilateral ceasefire in the state is a process aimed to give a chance to the people of Kashmir to live a peaceful and stress free life.
The Prime Minister said that decision to announce has also been taken to 'expose' the elements who in the name of Islam are exploiting the sentiments of people. He asked the 'misguided' youth to join the mainstream so that they play their part in the progress and development of Jammu & Kashmir.
Addressing a gathering here at Sher-I-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), Modi said the people who opposed the ceasefire are not well wishers and sympathizers of state more so Kashmir valley. He said that Government of India (GOI) is sincere in solving the problems of people of state especially the youth.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the 330 megawatts Kishenganga power project and also laid the foundation stone of 42 kilometers long Srinagar ring road. He also laid the foundation stone of Zojila tunnel at Leh. He also paid tributes to famous Ladakhi leader Kushak Bakula Rinpoche.
"It has been our endeavour to mitigate the sufferings of people of Kashmir and it was in this respect that we announced ceasefire in the state. I have been saying in the past and today I repeat that Kashmiris need to be embraced. The bullets as well as guns would not lead to any solution and peace is the ultimate solution to all the problems," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that announcement of ceasefire was a difficult decision and it was taken to see how sincere people who claim to be sympathizers of masses respond to the same. He said that since these people have opposed the ceasefire it is crystal clear as who is sincere towards the people of Kashmir. "Nations who supported violence have understood that violence leads to death and gore and as such have returned to peace. This should act as an eye-opener to our youth who have taken up guns and believe that violence would solve their problems. These youth should take advantage of ceasefire and return to the families since their mothers are yearning to see them safe, hale and hearty," said Modi.
The Prime Minister said that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre have been taking steps to bring the misguided youth into the national mainstream. He said that police, paramilitary forces and army are doing commendable job in bringing about peace in the state. "There are forces who don't want peace to return to Jammu & Kashmir and as such they are acting as stumbling block to the progress as well as development of the state. Youth who have gone astray should return and channelize their energy in developmental activities. These youth should give up arms and stones as development holds key to the future of every place including Jammu & Kashmir," said Modi.
The Prime Minister while making a mention of appointment of Dineshwar Sharma as special representative said that anybody who has any issue should consult Sharma and seek redressal of their grievances. He said that GOI would not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that Jammu & Kashmir achieves peace, progress, prosperity and development.
Modi said that out of 80,000 crore package announced for Jammu & Kashmir in November 2015 63,000 crores have been approved with 20,000 crores being spent so far. He said that 1200 crores would be spent on the construction of 42 kilometers of Srinagar ring road. He said that Kishenganga power project would augment the power supply in the state thus leading to economic progress of the state.
The Prime Minister listed the infrastructural activities undertaken by the Government of India for improving the overall development scenario in Jammu & Kashmir. He said that work is in progress to make Srinagar and Jammu cities as smart cities. He said that various steps have been taken to improve the power scenario in the state adding that 78 lakh LED bulbs were distributed among the people in Jammu & Kashmir.
Modi said that various road projects have been undertaken to improve connectivity in the state adding that snow bound areas have also been covered by proper road network. He said that 3500 crores are being spent on rehabilitation of displaced persons in the state. He said that 16,000 students of Jammu & Kashmir have benefitted from Prime Minister's Scholarship scheme.
