Fearing stone pelters, employees stay away from duties | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 19: Despite directives by the government, most of the employees prefer to stay away from duties on strike days of separatists fearing stone pelters. While separatists have been announcing strike on every issue in Kashmir, the employees who get hefty salaries make them an excuse to stay at homes. Some of the employees have been going to duties on alternate days but have adopted a different strategy of not getting noticed by the stone pelters. Government has warned employees several times that their salaries would be stopped if they do not attend offices on strike days. Asking for strict compliance, the government has warned several times enjoining: "any deviation from the order will be viewed seriously and recovery would be made from personal account of the erring officer". The situation on the ground is completely different with most employees not attending duties on strike days. "I have to go to directorate of school education department Srinagar for the duty but the stone pelters are not allowing me to proceed ahead," an employee said at the Kakai Saria. "On one hand government is pressurizing us to join the duty but on the other side we (employees) have to face stone pelting," the employee said. An official working at JLNM hospital Rainawari said the stone pelters continuously are obstructing the movement of health officials and also the ambulances. "Most of the times, the employees have to return to their homes when they are not allowed to go to the hospital," the official said. As the government continuous to pressurize employees to attend their duties, those who go to offices turn to casual dresses by wearing Khandress and chappal fearing backlash from the stone pelters. An employee of the DC office Srinagar who has to come from old city Srinagar said it was not possible for employees to join their duties during stone pelting. "I wear trousers and chappals while going to office. Except health employees, no official want to get noticed that he has to go office in the prevailing situation," the official said.
