Civil society mourns official apathy on World Environment Day | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 5: A unique protest was held in Srinagar on the eve of world environment day by scores of activists who were carrying black flags and placards. The activists were mourning the day as they allege that authorities are not at all moved to address the growing menace of plastic which is the theme for this year's World Environment Day. Large number of activists assembled in Srinagar's Pratap Park on Tuesday and held protest against the Government for its failure to address the growing menace of plastic waste in Kashmir valley. During the programme, noted theatre artist Rayees Wathoori presented a skit on pathetic condition of Dal Lake. People present in the programme appreciated the programme The World Environment Day is observed every year on 5th of June with a theme connected with preservation of Environment. The theme for 2018 World Environment Day is 'Break Plastic Pollution'. As reported already, J&K Government has failed to address the menace of plastic waste in J&K. State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Municipal authorities and other institutions have completely failed to enforce a complete ban on plastic and polythene in J&K. "Citizens of Jammu & Kashmir in general and Kashmir Valley in particular have nothing to celebrate this day in view of continued encroachments, vandalisation and destruction of our water bodies , parks , open plots , natural resources. Our agricultural fields have been converted into garbage dumps by people and there is nothing to celebrate this day" said Farooq Kuthoo Spokesman of J&K RTI Movement. |
