Govt of India may review impact of unilateral ceasefire | | | If not anything else militants and separatists have not responded to the unilateral ceasefire declared by the Government of India. Though Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, over ruled the Defence Minister and the top Army functionaries, who were not in favour of declaring unilateral ceasefire people have not appreciated the announcement. Now the Defence Minister supports extension in ceasefire and Mehbooba Mufti plans to request Union Home Minister to give another trial to unilateral ceasefire. Series of militancy related incidents took place in different sectors of the valley which may ultimately force the central Government to rethink on the issue. And the biggest grenade attacks were witnessed in Pulwama and Shopian districts, again in south Kashmir, in which at least 23 people, including eight security personnel, were injured in two grenade attacks by militants in Pulwama and Shopian districts of south Kashmir, which has been witnessing a spurt in such incidents. The first attack took place in Shopian district where 16 persons -- 12 civilians and four policemen - were injured, A grenade was hurled at the policemen but it landed on the roadside in a busy market area. The incident took place in the Batpora Chowk area of main town Shopian. "The militants targeted a police patrol in the busy chowk. The grenade exploded on the roadside, injuring at least a dozen civilians and four of security men, Grenades are emerging as the new weapons of choice for militants in Kashmir as over the last four days, militants have carried out 11 grenade attacks at different places across Kashmir. These grenade attacks, which have shattered the Ramzan ceasefire calm, have left 39 men, including 17 security men, injured. All these attacks in the past four days have taken place in Srinagar and south Kashmir's Pulwama, Shopian and Anantnag districts. Hence the apprehensions of the Defence Minister and the top functionaries of the Army about declaring unilateral ceasefire proved correct. And if the security forces were told to launch counter insurgency operations in Kashmir will it not lead to killing of militants and some civilians? This was in fact, the reason for the Government to concede the demand of unilateral ceasefire from Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti. And if she was supported by the National Conference in the announcement of unilateral ceasefire. Hence both Mehbooba Mufti and Dr Farooq Abdullah may have been regretting their support for unilateral ceasefire. It is so because since the initiation of unilateral ceasefire the incidents of violence had increased. The mainstream political leaders had believed that once the Government of India declared unilateral ceasefire militancy related violence would get reduced. They seem to have gone wrong in their estimation because neither the militants, nor their supporters nor the separatists want any decline in the level of militancy related violence. Once peace was restored, militants and separatists believed, it would lead to the automatic settlement of the Kashmir issue. Once militancy related violence peaked it could give an opportunity to Pakistan to rake up the Kashmir issue |
