Horror of 2014 deluge haunts people | Incessant rains cause havoc in Kashmir | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 29: The rains since Friday midnight have triggered a fear among the people of Kashmir about the flood as there has been decrease in carrying capacity of water bodies. The threat of flood is looming large over various areas of Kashmir due to increase of water level in streams that flow above the danger mark. "The Liddar Nallah, Vishow Nallah including the Sangam have crossed the danger level. There is every possibility of flood in various areas and we have declared flood alert," an official of Irrigation and Flood Control Department said. We have already predicted that there will be moderate to heavy rainfall," an official of Meteorological Department said. The official said there was a constant threat of floods as Valley would get more rains. People should not get panicked instead take some precautionary measures," the official said. The increase in water level has been haunting the people about the 2014 like floods when most parts were deluged in water. Police has also deployed its officials on the banks of river Jhelum to keep a watch on water level and any possible breaches in the wake of rainfall which may increase the water level of water bodies in the region. Government has also announced the pre flood evacuation plan in view of the prediction of heavy down pour in next few days. Meanwhile, food water has entered into several areas of the Valley, forcing people to move to safer areas. "As the weather department has predicted heavy rainfall, I took my family along and went to a relative's house of Lal Bazaar. I won't take any chance this time as during the September floods we were stranded for over a week here," Mohammad Shafi, a resident of Mehjoor Nagar said. He said the rains reminded them the horrors they underwent when the floods hit their area. Similar apprehensions are brewing among the residents of Shivpora, Batpora and Sonawar, "Those moments of flood are still haunting us when we spent three nights on the terrace of our neighbouring house and entire area was inundated in water. I always pray to God that we should not face such times again in our lives," said Bilal Ahmad, a local resident of Shivpora. |
