Arrangements in full swing for I-Phase of ULB Elections in North Kashmir | CS undertakes a detailed review | | Mohammad Sarfaraz

BARAMULLA, Oct 7: District Election Officer Baramulla Dr Nasir Ahmad Naqash today asserted that all the arrangements regarding Phase-1 of Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections 2018 scheduled on 8th of October have been made for the smooth and fair conduct of elections. The DC made these remarks during a press briefing wherein he also appealed people of Baramulla town to actively participate in the polls with great fervor. The DC said that elections are for the betterment of the people and the elected representatives will prove beneficial for the overall development and welfare of our towns. He also said that in the first phase of municipal polls, security has been beefed up across Baramulla where 37 candidates across Baramulla town are participating in the ULB election in which 14 women will also participate. The north Kashmir Baramulla town has a 21-ward municipality. All wards have nominations. However, in six wards single candidates have already won in absence of any opponent. The polls will be held at 35 booths of 15 wards for MC Baramulla. Furthermore, 6 candidates have been elected unopposed in the council. It is pertinent to mention here that, 21 wards will go for voting in Baramulla during first phase of elections. There are 35 polling stations among which 16 locations have been notified; whereas 15 wards are going for contest. However it is also learnt from sources that, police has made smooth arrangements for elections, the additional para military forces have been also put in place to deal with any untoward law and order situation. Kupwara district, would also witness a keen contest. In its 13 wards, two seats candidates stand elected unopposed leaving 11 berths of the municipality to 29 candidates in the fray. Handwara, has 13 wards, of them, six candidates for six berths have elected unopposed. This leaves seven seats on which as many as 18 candidates are contesting. In Bandipore, forty candidates will contest for the 12 wards while a candidate for one ward has been elected unopposed, said sources. Chief Secretary, BVR Subrahmanyam visited the twin district of north Kashmir's Bandipora and Kupwara district and undertook a detailed review of the preparedness for smooth, free and fair elections. |
