Ridiculous: For NC strengthening Panchayats is attack on special status of J&K | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 18: After sabotaging every attempt to hold Panchayats and Civic Body electiosn in J&K, National Conference today stated that any attempt to strength Panchayats is aimed at diluting special status of the State. Ridiculously party leadership observed that extending 73rd and 74th amendments is direct attack on article 370. Known as votery of enjoying absolute power without delegating the same at grassroots, National Conference today termed BJP's statement of extending 73rdand 74th constitutional amendments to Jammu and Kashmir State a direct attack on Art 370. Importantly 73rd amendments of the Indian Constitution is base of strengthening three-tier Panchayats Raj Institutions to empower people at the grassroots in real sense. Reacting to the statements made by BJP state president, NC general secretary Haji Ali Muhammad Sagar said, "It is a calculated attempt to fiddle with the special status of the state. The amendments in the state's Panchayat Raj Act, brought in by then Omar Abdullah led government are far more democratic, egalitarian and empowering than the central government acts." Importantly for decades together NC leadership has not conducted elections of Panchayats and Civic Bodies in J&K. Despite being in power for so many years, NC leadership has never allowed dilution of democratic power at the grassroots, rather party leadership enjoyed absolute power. Sagar said that National Conference didn't yield to the pressure by its ally Congress during its tenure to extend the 73rd and 74th amendments. "We were able to convince our alliance partner that the state's own ULB and Panchayat act has given more powers to local body representatives than the central government acts." |
