Chief Engineer Power Development Department claims heavy snowfall led to breakdown | Bizarre! Few inches of snowfall plunges entire Kashmir valley into darkness | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 3: Chief Engineer Power Development Department (PDD) Kashmir, Hashmat Qazi issued a bizarre statement on Saturday evening saying that heavy snowfall has led to collapse of most of the transmission lines in the various parts of Kashmir valley. One is forced to laugh at the statement of Chief Engineer since the snowfall recorded is low or moderate and not heavy as claimed by him. By 8 PM on Saturday, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir recorded couple of inches of snow and despite this the whole district was plunged into darkness. Barring few places in districts like Shopian, Kulgam and Bandipora most of the areas in Kashmir received low to moderate snowfall with the depth of snow at these places not crossing more than six inches. If six inches of snowfall is heavy snowfall then Almighty should save this land since there are chances that snowfall of one foot may be recorded in the coming months in the valley. The Chief Engineer issued a statement that heavy snowfall in the valley has resulted in trees with thick foliage coming down heavily on electrical lines damaging most of the 33KV lines. He said intermittent rainfall and now heavy snowfall led to frequent faults in the electrical system affecting supply in most parts of the uptown and civil line areas of Srinagar. "Two main trunk lines including Centaur and TRC coming from Cheshmashahi have come down after huge trees fell on them. Karan Nagar and Barbar Shah Lines are also under trees at various places, but that restoration process is well underway. Full-fledged restoration work has been underway but continuous snowfall has made it very difficult to maintain the lines resulting in decreased power supply to just 80 MWs as against the normal 1150 MWs supplied this morning," said the Chief Engineer. Although, Chief Secretary B V R Subrahmanyam and Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, advisor to Governor Satya Pal Malik pulled up the PDD officers and officials for their failure to restore the power supply following snowfall in the valley, the department higher ups continue to offer lame excuses for the power breakdown in Kashmir. The Chief Secretary and the advisor carried out separate meetings at Jammu and Srinagar respectively and asked the officers of PDD to ensure early restoration of power in the valley. However, it does not matter for the department higher ups since they claim that heavy snowfall has led to power breakdown. Despite spending huge money on the maintenance of transmission lines and other related equipment, the PDD has been found wanting when it comes to providing power supply to the people during the vagaries of weather. The department has failed to overcome this challenge over the years with the people manning the department not feeling ashamed of their follies. It seems that the PDD has limited its mandate of providing power supply to the people when everything is fine and sun is shining in the state. As and when something awry happens on the weather front, the department people are found wanting and they come with excuses while hiding their inefficiency. |
