Apprehending probes PDP-NC defend 'tainted institutions, babus' | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 3: Even as the Raj Bhawan is set to go for major probe into complaints of "rampant corruption and favoritism" in the government establishments, the two main regional parties of Kashmir, the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),have started playing the "victim card" on behalf of the institutions and babus under scanner. The regional players look unnerved when Governor SP Malik has toughened his stand on war against corruption. He has not only publicly spoken against corruption but is likely to take his statements to logical conclusion. Sources said Rajbhawan is preparing a "master plan" against corruption in the state. Sources said both the NC and the PDP, which have ruled the state for years, are apprehensive that if a major probe is called, skeletons would start to tumble from the closet and reveal muck of their regimes. With this is mind the parties have come up with the "armies" who have been allegedly assigned the task of sabotaging the expected probe. Sources said some leaders from both the parties have also started communication with the Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik as also with the civil society "to seek public support against any probes." Sources said the National Conference has decided that not Abdullahs but their senior leader Ali Muhammad Sagar and his team will be "defending the tainted institutions." Sources said the party has decided that neither of the Abdullahs will be commenting over any such issue as one of them is already a key accused in the multi-crore cricket scam. Sagar, who had recently called on Governor SP Malik, has been tasked to train his guns on the Raj Bhawan again. And NC leader has already started to issue statements that "attempts were being made to malign institutions." "NC will be trying its best to defend the government establishments against probe lest the muck of decades is revealed," said an insider. In the PDP camp, on the other side, the party has decided that apart from party president Mehbooba Mufti and spokesman Rafi Mir, Syed Altaf Bukhari will also be commenting on the issue. Sources said the twin parties are trying to rope in support of civil society in Kashmir as well. Sources said the civil society faces are being told to issue statements that "some vested interests were trying to malign state assets." "This is being done to give a false notion that probe will be anti Kashmir and thus those who want resolution to Kashmir must speak against any investigations," said an observer. Despite repeated attempts the two regional parties couldn't be contacted for comments. |
