Seven years on, installation of CCTV cameras yet to become reality in Kishtwar | Killing of BJP State Secretary raises several questions | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report Kishtwar, Nov 4: The killing of a BJP State Secretary Anil Parihar and his brother Ajeet Parihar has raised several questions on the safety and security of the common people in Kishtwar district. As per the details available with Early Times, the killings of Anil Parihar and his brother Ajeet Parihar have brought the working of security agencies under scanner as the PHQ had assigned the job of installation of CCTV cameras in Kishtwar and other parts of the state seven years ago, but the vital project became victim of prevailing corruption at highest level. The lackadaisical approach of PHQ could be judged from the fact that even after seven years since the previous NC-Congress government announced the installation of 18 CCTV cameras at vital positions in Kishtwar district, the proposal has been struck between the police and district administration. Even though a police team led by former Additional SP Kishtwar Kulbir inspected various sensitive spots in Kishtwar town where the CCTV cameras were to be installed and the contractors even installed the towers at many places in Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas, but these cameras have still not been installed. The objective of installation of CCTV cameras was not only to check militancy related activities, but also to keep check on eve teasing, thefts and also traffic violations, but despite everything in place, the project is yet to be implemented on ground. People had also demanded installation of CCTV cameras at vulnerable places like hotels, shopping malls, schools, tuition centers, but assurances remained hollow promises. It is worthwhile to mention that government of Jammu and Kashmir had decided to install CCTV cameras in Kishtwar and Rajouri after both the district witnessed clashes. In these clashes both the districts rioters set ablaze the shops and government properties, beside a widespread loot of public property. By installing the CCTV cameras in these two districts, the government attempted to keep check on the rioters in case any clashes broke out in future. |
