Day after Shopian encounter, security forces bust terror 'hideout' in orchard | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 23: A day after an encounter in Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir, in which four terrorists were gunned down, security forces on Wednesday uncovered an underground hideout at an orchard that was being used by the terrorists to hide. This is the third such hideout to be busted by the security forces in the state in the last one and a half months. The hideout appeared to be fully equipped with ration items that could have helped the militants stay in the area for a long time, a national channel reported. The terrorists had dug a long 'burrow-like' cave in the orchard as their hideout, which was big enough to house four to five terrorists. On Tuesday, security forces killed four terrorists in a fierce gunfight in Shopian's Zainapora area. The slain militants included the brother of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, reports said. The militant has been identified as Shams-ul-Haq Mengnoo, who was the younger brother of an IPS officer who is posted in the North-East. Mengnoo was a Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery student and had gone missing last May, before joining the militant ranks. All three militants killed in the encounter reportedly belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen. Meanwhile, four photojournalists, who were covering the local resident's protests while the encounter was on, were injured after security forces fired pellets to disperse the crowd. Six security officers and a civilian also received injuries during the clashes. |
