No smartness in handling Smart city projects in twin capitals | Administration still finalizing logos | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 23: At a time when the government has spent just one percent of total funds on Smart city project in twin capital cities, the authorities have invented new ways to divert the attention of the people from government's lethargic approach. As per the insiders, the government in order to duck embarrassment over failing to meet the deadline for smart city implementation in Jammu as well as in Srinagar is inviting logos for the smart cities. In Srinagar, the government went on record, stating that the Srinagar Smart City Limited on Jan 22, this year held an assessment meeting of the expert jury to evaluate the entries for a logo design for the Srinagar Smart City programme. The jury, as per the official statement, included experts from the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Kashmir University's School of Fine Arts. Independent professional graphic designers were also part of the jury assessing the entries. However, what the government tends to overlook is the glaring fact that instead of focusing on smart city logos, it should have concentrated on the actual implementation of the Smart City proposal. "This is nothing but a mere time-consuming exercise aimed at giving people a false impression that the Smart city proposal is in the offing and work on it is in the progress. The fact is that the government cannot even make a single street in Jammu or in Srinagar smart," says an official. As per the official documents in possession of the Early Times, the central government has sanctioned an estimated amount of 500 Crore rupees out of Prime Minister's special package for the creation of smart cities in the twin capitals of the state. As the entire amount of Rs 500 crore stands sanctioned since the year 2017, mere 1.50 crore has so far been spent in Jammu and Srinagar on the project. The figures have once again taken a lid off the government's non- serious approach towards ensuring the timely completion of the developmental projects in the state. Pertinently, the State Government vide Order No.1081-GAD dated August 21, 2017 constituted Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) as Companies Limited by shares named as Jammu Smart City Limited and Srinagar Smart City Limited under the Companies Act, 2013 with authorized share capital of Rs 10 lakh, equity share of Rs 10 each and paid up capital of Rs 10 lakh for both the companies for implementation of smart city development projects. |
