Ambiguous genitalia, intersex disorders surgically correctable: Dr Lucky Gupta | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 5: Showing her endeavor to provide quality patient care with cost-effectiveness, Dr Lucky Gupta, an eminent pediatric surgeon and urologist trained from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, said that the disorders of sexual ambiguity require correctable surgeries to either remove or create reproductive organs appropriate for the gender of the child. In a press statement issued here today, Dr Lucky Gupta said that the congenital anomalies exist all over the world poses a significant healthcare problem among which complex urologic and genital problems like intersex disorders (ambiguous genitalia) and severe variety of hypospadias form small percentage. "An abnormal development of genitalia poses an emergency like situation and the announcement of the gender of the child triggers a set of social and gender related responses from the parents and the other members of the family, so it becomes essential to determine as quickly as possible, the gender of the child and also to establish the sex of rearing in the interest of the child and the parents", she added. Dr Lucky Gupta said that she is performing surgeries upon variety of complicated child surgical conditions for last more than nine years in Jammu. Recently, she successfully performed surgeries on two such patients of ambiguous genitalia at Child Surgical Centre at IM Clinic, Janipur with the help of dedicated anesthetist, assistant and other members of her team. One of the operated patient was less than 10 years of age and reared as female and other one who was less than 20 years was reared as male. "The patients were evaluated clinically, investigated, cytogenetically and radiologically. The problem was explained to the parents of the patients and various treatment options were disclosed to them", she said and added, accordingly, children were subsequently operated upon and discharged with satisfactory results. |
