Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 14: On the third day of Vice Chancellors' meet on "Academic Leadership Training in Higher Education" at Central University of Jammu, Prof. Raj Nehru, Vice-Chancellor, Shri Vishwakarma Skill University, Haryana stressed upon teachers to compel students to think rather than copy. The speaker deliberated on "Skill Development as Strategy for Academic Excellence". While presenting his ideas on the said theme he referred to ancient Indian integrated education system of 'Kaushal & Shiksha'. He was equally vocal about was skill development programme in the higher education system. Throughout his deliberation, Prof. Raj Nehru remained focused on meaningful and valuable research which must have social and academic relevance with an immediate effect. He came down heavily on contemporary pattern of academic teaching saying, "we compel people to copy rather than to think". He also highlighted the pivotal role that exercises like 'problem solving, debates, discussion and project works' playing the domain of skill development. Prof. Raj Nehru also pinpointed the shortcomings in current higher education system-the glaring gap between 'pedagogy' and 'curriculum'. Prof. Kumar Suresh, Registrar, NIEPA, New Delhi, was second speaker and spoke on the theme "Balancing Autonomy with Accountability". The speaker urged that every teacher/faculty must have autonomy at higher education level to express his/her views and also put it in practice. Prof. H.P. Bansal, Vice-Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh Technical University, graced the third session and spoke on the theme "Effective Leadership and Strategic Planning". The last talk of the session was by Prof. R. L. Raina, Vice-Chancellor J.K. Laxmipat University Lucknow, on the theme "Autonomy, Critical Competencies, and Governance". |
