SRS seeks scrapping of IWT | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 18: Shri Ram Sena today reiterated its demand to scrap Indus Water Treaty (IWT) henceforth, in the interest of country in general and J&K in particular. SRS State President Rajiv Mahajan said that blood and water could not flow together, adding that any favour to Pakistan from now onwards would be heartbreaking for brave soldiers who were fighting decisive fight to root out terrorism from J&K. Mahajan further said that any pact can be successful only in an atmosphere of goodwill, trust and friendship, which are missing at present as Pakistan continues bleeding India and hence continuing Indus Water Treaty in present scenario is pointless and uncalled for. "Successive governments in J&K have been pushing for scrapping of the World Bank-brokered 1960 Indus Water Treaty (IWT) between India and Pakistan which has caused heavy losses to the state and put a spanner in its development , but now is the right time to do it", he said. The water-sharing agreement restricts J&K from fully exploiting its hydro resources for irrigation and power generation. "It is a bottleneck for which J&K state has forgone its development of industry, power and agriculture for the last 60 years. After the Pulwama fidayeen attack on CRPF besides weighing military and non-military options to avenge Islamabad scrapping of IWT is most effective option", Mahajan added. |
