ECI in a fix over holding Assembly, Parliamentary elections together in JK | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 8: Chances are high that the Election Commission of India may not hold the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections simultaneously in Jammu and Kashmir with security being cited as one of the prime concern. There are reports that the Lok Sabha polls slated to be held in April this year will be conducted as per the schedule. However, the assembly polls which were likely to be held along with the Lok Sabha polls are going to be delayed, primarily due to security considerations. Though, the Chief Electoral Officer stated on Friday that his office hasn't reached to any conclusion as yet and that the deliberations over the issue are going on, insiders divulge that while LS polls will be held on time, assembly elections will have to wait for now. Early Times already had reported that the political groups in unison have pitched for the conduct of parliament as well as the assembly elections together in the state so that an elected government is put in place and turbulence being witnessed on the political front in the state is ended. However, the Jammu and Kashmir government is in no mood to go for the parliament and the assembly elections together. The state authorities as per the reports have expressed their concern in the backdrop of Pulwama attack. The state government has submitted that it is going to be herculean to conduct the assembly as well as the parliament polls together in a region which is passing through one of the violent phases in its history of 30 year militancy. "Against less than 100 candidates for Lok Sabha election the government will have to provide security to not less than 900 candidates for assembly elections. The security situation in Kashmir valley in the aftermath of the recent militant attack on a CRPF convoy has thrown up huge challenges on multiple security fronts in Kashmir valley," government sources were quoted by the reports as having said. Meanwhile, on January 3, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the government was willing to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir along with General Elections which are slated to be held by May. "If Election Commission wants, our government will have no objection," Singh said replying to a debate on imposition of Central rule in the state. He said there would be no obstruction from the Centre for holding elections in the state. We are willing to provide whatever security force Election Commission wants for holding elections there" he said. |
