Lok Sabha elections 2019: Rahul, Omar talks for poll pact | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 11: A day after Election Commission of India (ECI) announced schedule for Lok Sabha elections, Congress President Rahul Gandhi and National Conference Vice-President Omar Abdullah started talks in New Delhi for a possible poll pact in the state. Credible sources told Early Times that National Conference Vice-President and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is New Delhi to meet Congress President Rahul Gandhi. "The duo will meet and discuss to devise a strategy for Lok Sabha elections. After few rounds of talks we expect that a poll pact deal will be announced," a leader privy to the development told Early Times. He said that both the parties National Conference and the Congress may decide to contest polls together through a seat sharing arrangement. "Talks are going on seat sharing and cabinet births," he claimed. Sources said that most of the leaders of the both the political parties have given consent to party heads for entering into an alliance. This year in the month of February, Rahul Gandhi had favored alliance for both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and called upon two top leaders of the State unit to hold negotiations with the "like minded parties" and then report to him for firming up the tie-up. Rahul was reported to have said this at a meeting of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chiefs and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders of all States in New Delhi today. PCC president GA Mir and former CLP leader Rigzin Jora attended the meeting from Jammu and Kashmir. In Jammu and Kashmir, sources said, Rahul Gandhi indicated that the Congress should be open to alliance with National Conference and People's Democratic Party (PDP) without compromising with its seat base. However, first preference of the Congress remained the National Conference with which it had tie-up in 2014 Lok Sabha elections also and the two parties had successfully run the coalition Government in the State for six years from 2008 to 2014 under the Chief Ministership of Omar Abdullah. After ECI announcement, Omar Abdullah accused Minister Narendra Modi of surrendering before Pakistan and militants. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "surrendered" before Pakistan, militants and separatists, National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah said on twitter soon after the Election Commission's no to simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir. |
