No proper figures of KP population, voters available with Govt | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 15: Kashmiri Pandits who are leading 30th year in exile are demanding revision of their voter lists. Not satisfied with the figures of total voters in official voter lists, Kashmiri Pandits say the number has not increased since 1990 after their mass exodus from Valley and remained static since then. The Pandits also accuse the Government of not doing proper census of their population as theofficial figures of their population are much less than the actual number. As per data submitted by the Pandits, their population is over seven lakh at present scattered all over globe and five lakh of them is putting up in different parts of India. However, the Government has put contradictory figures of their population which is far less than the real figure claimed by Pandit organisations. The Kashmiri Pandits claim that same is the case with the voter lists also whose number is also shown less than one lakh which could be more than double. Expressing surprise over the half hearted approach of Government towards the community, KP leaders accuse it of not doing a meaningful exercise of working out a correct figure of their population and voters. Moreover the Pandits also accuse the Government of its discriminatory approach with them. On one hand Government debars the community from casting their votes in Jammu where they are putting up at present and considering them voters of Kashmir while on the other the community youth from backward areas of valley are not given backward area certificate with the plea that they are no longer living in that area. This speaks volumes about the double standards of the Government, alleged the displaced Pandits. |
