General elections: Congress on the mat, courtesy Rahul | Rafale Deal campaign collapses | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 22: AICC President Rahul Gandhi in his reply to the Supreme Court (SC) over BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi's criminal contempt petition today "expressed regret" for his fake comment claiming the SC has acknowledged that Chowkidar Chor Hai". The Congress president while campaigning had recently alleged that "Supreme Court has said, chowkidaar chor hai" over the Rafale deal which resulted in a criminal contempt petition by Lekhi. The SC subsequently sent a notice to Rahul Gandhi instructing him to explain his statement. In an earlier hearing the apex court had observed that it had on "no occasion" made any such statement and had given the Congress president time till today (22 April) to file his written reply. Now in his written reply to the SC, Rahul Gandhi has claimed that he gave the statement in the "heat of the political campaign". In the reply he has also alleged that "his statements are now being 'misused' by his political opponents". His regret came just on the eve of the third phase of the general elections and it has become a major election issue. The BJP, the media and opinion leaders and parties like Shiv Sena and Janata Dal United are using the regret of Rahul Gandhi to the extent possible to create an impression that "Rahul Gandhi is a liar" and "co credence should be given to any statement that he makes". |
