Amit sensitizes SKAUST-J on Road Safety Measures

Jammu, April 23, 2019: Amit Sharma, Special Secretary to Government, Transport Department with additional charge of J&K Road Safety Council today sensitized faculty as well as students studying in Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu about Road Safety, Safe Driving Practices alongwith creating awareness on various issues pertaining to contributing towards improving traffic management. Those who attended this important sensitisation programme led by Special Secretary Transport included Acting Vice-Chancellor K.S Risam, Rajesh Talwar, Registrar and Comptroller Rajesh Talwar, Director Research Dr Jag Paul Sharma, Director Education Dr T.A.S Ganaie, Director, Planning and Monitoring Dr Jag Paul Sharma, Estates Officer Sushil Pandita, several Deans, University Librarian Dr S.K Gupta and Nodal Officers of SKAUST-J apart from students and other faculty members.

Special Secretary Amit Sharma visited SKAUST-J on request by this prominent Agriculture University of the state to share his expert opinion about Road Safety and create awareness to mitigate transport related challenges. In a pointed address, Amit touched several areas for knowledge enhancement of young agriculture graduates, post graduates and faculty of the University wherein he quoted several contemporary examples and rules which should be followed while driving vehicles on roads. He pointed out that the student community should be the torch bearers and trend setters to set the traffic into proper perspective.

The student and teaching faculty of SKAUST-J got answered from Sepcial Secretary Transport Amit Sharma regarding their queries on Toad Safety and gave suggestions for improving traffic conditions and bringing safety on roads of winter capital Jammu in the state such as removal of rehris (food stalls) from side of main highway road of Jammu leading upto Satwari which has led to major traffic menace these days. They also pointed that AAI should created an Exit Gate of Jammu Airport in inner road like Entry Gate as it chokes traffic on R.S Pura road many-a-times due to it. Also, they requested that flyovers should come up fast in Satwari Chowk, Rehari Chowk, etc to help towards better traffic management.

Amit mentioned that we should also look towards adopting alternative means of movement such as Bicycles, Pooled Movement of Vehicles for reaching common destinations, Universities should encourage safe driving practises and hold regular awareness camps to sensitive public on road safety and management. He elaborated that the Government under broad vision of Advisor K.Skandan and directions of Principal Secretary Transport Asgar Samoon has taken lot of initiatives such as Introduction of Electric Buses in both Jammu as well as Srinagar, launch of an Incentive Scheme for replacing old buses and mini-buses, overhauling the fleet of J&K SRTC and feeding various hungry routes, implementing Solatium Scheme for Hit & Run Cases, Launch of a Passenger Welfare Fund, Acquiring lot of Road Safety related equipment, etc.

SKAUST-J acting VC K.S Risam thanked Amit Sharma for taking time out of his busy schedule to sensitize staff and students of the University about several important Road Safety measures and requested him for organising more such sessions for welfare of student and teaching community in different Universities in near future.
