Rajasthan govt asks police to have DSPs in every district to look after women's safety | | | Jaipur, May 11 The Rajasthan government has ordered every district to have a Deputy Superintendent of Police to look after women's safety.
The decision comes after the Alwar gang rape in which the district police received considerable flak for dereliction of duty.
Alwar Police did not register an FIR for several days after the incident and actively pursued the case only after pictures of the complainant and accused went viral on social media.
The Alwar Superintendent of Police (SP) had to vacate office while the SHO of Thanagazi Police Station was suspended and three constables and an ASI were sent to police lines after the negligence came to light.
Earlier, after alleging that there was a conspiracy to suppress the matter, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded a CBI probe.
Union minister and BJP leader Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore told India Today TV, "The police and the administration are not doing their work. Firstly, this incident happened and later it was suppressed. An investigation should be conducted by the CBI over this conspiracy in politics of keeping people in the dark. Who gave the order? Police personnel only follow orders. Someone would have given the order that this case should be suppressed till the elections are over."
Six people have been arrested in connection with the Alwar gang rape case, including Mukesh Gujjar, who is allegedly responsible for putting the video on social media.
The state government has directed Rajasthan Police to provide protection to the woman's family.
According to the woman's husband, the two of them were traveling on a motorbike in Thanagazi area on April 26 when they were stopped by the group of six men. They were forced to remove their clothes and beaten up badly. The woman was allegedly gang-raped by the five accused and a video was made of the assault.
The accused allegedly tried to extort money from the victims threatening to circulate the video on social media. The video was circulated on social media after the accused could not get the money.
"Five people took turns to rape my wife in front of my eyes...", the husband said.
Police took several days to register an FIR only after the video started circulating on social media.
