Azad vetoes Bhalla's name for provincial president | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 5: Congress stalwart and leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad is learnt to have vetoed the name of Raman Bhalla as provincial president for Jammu region. The name of Raman Bhalla was doing rounds amidst speculations that Congress is mulling re-structuring of the State unit with the appointment of three provincial presidents, one each for Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir regions. Even as suggestion in this regard was being made since past, the same was vigorously stressed by the leaders from Jammu and Ladakh regions during the high level review meeting of the Congress party, held recently at Srinagar under the chairmanship of Ghulam Nabi Azad, for discussing the reasons for party debacle in the Lok Sabha elections. After the meeting, sources said that PCC president G A Mir and a few leaders from Jammu suggested the name of Raman Bhalla as provincial president for Jammu if the re-structuring of organization is affected. These leaders purportedly suggested that after quitting of Sham Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla was most suitable person to lead Jammu as the provincial president. However, sources said that Ghulam Nabi Azad vetoed the name of Raman Bhalla and opined that caste factor should also be kept in mind in selecting the person to lead Jammu. Even as sources close to Azad claim that he wants a Brahman leader to be installed as provincial president for Jammu, which is dominated by this community, party insiders believe that Bhalla's name was vetoed because of his closeness with the incumbent PCC president G A Mir. |
