Bengal man declares mother a witch, thrashes her to usurp property | | | Bishnupur June 18 A man allegedly declared his mother a witch and thrashed and starved her over the ancestral property in North Gobindapur area, Bishnupur in West Bengal. The incident happened on Sunday night when the woman was tortured and thrown out of her house by her son and his wife's family on the accusation of being a witch.
The woman, however, claimed that all this was done to pressurise her for the property. Not only this, the victim alleged that she was being starved by her son and his wife for several days, and was being regularly tortured by them for the property, a Bengali news daily reported.
The victim, who works as a local administrator in the locality, said that on Sunday when she returned home, her daughter-in-law's family was present at home. She alleged that the family members of her daughter-in-law, along with her son, accused her of being a witch and then thrashed her before kicking her out of her own house.
The victim was rescued by her neighbours, who were aware of her situation. The woman said, "I don't want to give the property to them, that is why they are torturing me. I will never give the property to them."
The woman told police that the torture started soon after her elder son got married.
The victim's son works as a carpenter and wants to sell the property to a promoter, which his mother is opposed to.
Based on the woman's complaint, the son and his wife have been arrested by the police. The police are also monitoring the situation.
The accused have denied all allegations and said that they did not throw the woman out of home, she left on her own will. |
