Amit Shah Introducing New Reservation Bill For J&K | | | Srinagar
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is introducing a bill on the reservation rights of people residing close to the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, media reports said on Monday.
The bill once passed, will replace the ordinance presented and approved earlier in February by the governor Satya Pal Malik’s administration. ‘
The bill aims to give reservation benefits to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) living in Jammu and Kashmir. The residents living near Line of Control which ends near Akhnoor sector already get reservation benefits according to Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004.
The press release issued at the time of introduction of an ordinance said: “Earlier, the provision of 3% reservation was available only for youth living within 6 kms of the LoC in J&K. Now, this provision will be applicable for people living near the international border also.”
This is going to be the first legislative exercise from the home minister after the recently conducted parliament elections.
Since Jammu and Kashmir is under president’s rule currently, all the constitutional powers lie with the parliament.
Once the introduced the bill will be tabled for debate and then passed through vote.
