Burhan's anniversary: JRL divided on hartal call | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 8: The so called Joint Resistance Leadership was divided on the hartal call given on the death anniversary of Hizbul Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two associates on July 8. Sources said the moderate Hurriyat led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was not willing to call for a hartal but that the Hurriyat (G) led by Syed Ali Geelani took a lead and said the call was to be given. Sources said the Hurriyat M had recently held numerous meetings but that call for hartal on Burhan's anniversary was nowhere discussed in any of the meetings. "It was neither in the agenda of the meetings nor it was discussed in any of the meetings but being party to the JRL, the call had to be supported as a symbolic gesture," said a source in the Hurriyat. Sources said the Hurriyat M was of the opinion that given the change in situation the hartal call would only invoke mild response and thus be humiliating as people were fed up of violence. Interestingly on the day of hartal the private traffic was plying almost normally and even some public transport vehicles likes cabs were seen ferrying people. Sources said most of the leaders in the moderate Hurriyat want end to protests. It is pertinent to mention that the National Investigation Agency action against terror funding cases has cut the separatists to their size. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was among those recently questioned by the NIA. Initially Mirwaiz had responded to the NIA summons saying that he couldn't travel to New Delhi and that if he is to be questioned the investigators should come to Kashmir and question him. But following the third summon, the Mirwaiz silently travelled to Delhi and appeared before the NIA. |
