Train service resumes in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 9: Train service was resumed on Tuesday after remaining suspended on Monday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists had called for a general strike on the third death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani who was killed in an encounter by security forces. Trains will operate in the Kashmir valley today following an advisory received from police last night to resume train service, a railway official told news agency. He said therefore train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir. Similarly, train service will also operate on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region, he added. All the morning trains operated as per schedule on all routes, he added. We are acting on the advice of divisional administration, particularly police since safety and security of the passengers was necessary, he said adding in the past railway suffered massive damages during protests and hartals. Train service has become very popular in the valley as it is very cheap, fast and safe against other mode of transport available in the valley. Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter by security forces on July 8 in Kokernag area in south Kashmir district of Anantnag. However, his killing evoked massive protests across the Kashmir valley. |
