Waterlogged Udhampur exposes MC | | | Ashwani Sharma Early Times Report udhampur, July 9: Udhampur town received heavy rainfall on Tuesday, which however exposed the working of the Municipal Committee. Almost entire Udhampur town was waterlogged for the day, causing huge inconvenience to the commuters and pedestrians, local residents told Early Times. The markets wore a deserted look as customers preferred not to venture into waterlogged roads and lanes. Only those who wanted to buy emergency items like medicines braved the heavy rains. "If rains continue for few more day, we will incur heavy losses as people prefer to remain indoors because of waterlogging," a shopkeeper at Venus Chowk told this reporter. Many more people including students were disturbed as water from drains overflowed on roads and some people were putting sandbags at the entrance of their houses to prevent the water from into their premises. "Had the municipal authorities cleared the blocked drains, the water would have flowed smoothly and there would have been no waterlogging and flood-like situation in the town. We fear that water from streets will enter our homes," Sarita, a housewife, rued. The waterlogging also affected traffic and many two-wheelers had a fall. Meanwhile, as the rains were causing problems for the people, no official from the MC, including its president, bothered to visit the areas affected by waterlogging in the town, further angering the locals. "We regret our decision to elect these people as councillors. If they can't visit us in the time of crisis, what are they supposed to do then," asked a retired teacher living at Dhandapaderh. No senior official of the MC was available for comment. |
