Amid need for forestation, Govt school massacres trees in Sunderbani | | | AB Sharma Early Times Report rajouri, July 17: Even as the government lays emphasis on need for forestation, a government school in Sunderbani here has chopped down around half a dozen trees that would give sunshade and fresh air in the area. The majestic trees at Govt Middle school Nahoti Lower Hathal have been cut down without any formal approval from the concerned authorities in the district. The school students and the staff said the trees were source of natural shelter from scorching heat during summers. But the school authorities are understood to have chopped down the trees to meet "person interests." "The cutting down of trees has sent a wrong signal. What message does the government want to give by destroying our natural assets," the locals said demanding an inquiry into the matter. The locals said the Zonal Education Officer was informed about the matter but that no action was taken. "We think the office of the ZEO is hand in glove with the school authorities," the local said. When contacted the ZEO said the matter would be looked into. Meanwhile the locals have appealed Governor SP Malik to look into the matter. |
