Amid rising accidents, SRTC plan to start night service can prove 'disservice' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 20: Even as the accidents have been rise on the national highway and around 50 persons were killed only last month, the government plan to start night bus service on the Srinagar-Jammu highway has drawn flak from experts who fear that the "service may prove deadly." As per the government, "For the comfort of commuters, Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC) has decided to start night service from Jammu to Srinagar and vice-versa after 15th August 2019." The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Principal Secretary Transport Department Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon. MD JKSRTC, RTO Kashmir, SSP Srinagar, SSP Traffic Srinagar, and other officials were also present in the meeting, said an official spokesman. But the traffic experts said "Unless the road safety in improved on the highway and the concerned are mode more accountable, such a night service can prove disastrous." Pleading their point, the experts said it unless the daytime accidents on the highway come down and accountability is put in place such a bus service can prove counterproductive. The experts said there were no doubts that the SRTC drivers are known for their driving skills but they wouldn't be the only ones driving on the highway. "There are numerous reports that licenses are given to untrained people who make the travel difficult. Besides also there is a need for through inspection of the whole highway and define the risky spots. Before taking such an action, this entire plan of night service is half baked," the experts said. The J&K SRTC officials however said there was no such issue that the travel at night may prove risky. "We have highly trained drivers," the official said on the condition of anonymity. |
