KP exposes Govt's non-seriousness over community's rehab | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 25: A Kashmiri Pandit living amid the trying circumstances has blatantly unmasked the official apathy and government's indifferent attitude towards the KPs, revealing how he is being made to move from pillar to post to get his wife treated who is suffering from a terminal disease. Ashok Koul, a former government employee and now a pensioner, has made his woeful plight public, exposing how the government officials have been coercing him to move from pillar to post in search of the government assistance that could save his wife's life at such a crucial stage. He has made his misery public and has said: "I am compelled to write as I am a poor pensioner drawing Rs 12000 per month. My wife is suffering from cancer and I am unable to bear the huge expenses. I approached the state Chief Minister and the case was sent to Relief Commissioner. My wife's treatment has cost me more than Rs 11 lakhs till date, but the Relief Commissioner has neither settled the case nor replied back. I am so poor that I can't even pay a bribe. I have handed over the bills but nothing has come so far. I approached the honourable Governor and my request was repeatedly sent to Relief Commissioner, but the concerned officer did nothing. So I request to your kind self (concerned authorities) to kindly intervene on humanitarian grounds so that I can treat my wife. On humanitarian grounds kindly intervene and get my case settled," reads the painful note. Now, when the government seems to have been making tall claims about providing all sorts of assistance available to the poor and underprivileged Kashmiri Pandits, the letter seem to have been spilling the beans, revealing the dark mysterious secrets of the present administration and how due to the pathetic mode of functioning of bureaucrats, these poor souls are bearing the brunt of official anarchy. Early Times had in the past highlighted that the government has no record about how many Kashmiri Pandits are living in Valley and how many of them have migrated to other parts of the world. The government admittance to such a startling revelation in the year 2016 caused stir in the public domain with people coming to know how serious were the successive regimes of the state to bring back the KPs. Though there is war of words being witnessed between the then opposition National conference and the then ruling PDP over the return of the Pandits to their homeland, the efforts made in the past were so meagre that reflection of the sorry state of affairs becomes evident and clear. The government in the lower house in the year 2016 stated that it has been asked by the government of India to approve the construction of additional 6000 Transit Accommodations for migrant Pandits who are in the government service in Kashmir Valley. The government at that time said they had also been asked to create additional 3000 jobs for migrant Pandit youth for which, they said, the process is efforts are on. The government has stated on record that under the package of Rs 1618.40 cr sanctioned in 2008-9, the assistance of Rs 7.5 lakh each is being provided to those who intend to return back to their native places. For those migrants who couldn't return to their native places because of some reasons, the controversial housing colonies (Pandit townships) had been proposed to be constructed in certain areas of Kashmir, the government said in the year 2016. Since then, there has been no word about it. Under the package, the Pandits were ought to be provided a one-time grant for the revival of their agriculture & horticulture land in Valley. During this period they will continue to receive the financial assistance and scholarships for their school going children. The Pandits are currently being provided monthly cash assistance of Rs 3250 per person monthly subject to a maximum of Rs 13,000 per family. |
