Celebrating "Id-ul-Zuha" | | Vinod Chandrashekhar Dixit | 8/10/2019 10:42:47 PM |
| India is said to be in numerable number of religions, cultures and races. Among the various religions that dot the Indian canvas, Islam occupies a significant place as it is practised by a large chunk of Indian population. Id-ul-Zuha, Bakrid is also known as Eid-ul-Zuha which is an Islamic festival celebrated by Muslims all over the world. Muslims around the world believe that Allah (God) commanded Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Ibrahim followed God's orders, but his son was replaced by a sheep at the last moment. Muslims celebrate this at Eid al-Zuha. Eid al-Zuha is called Id-ul-Zuha in Arabic and Bakr-Id in the Indian subcontinent, because of the tradition of sacrificing a goat or "bakri" in Urdu. It is said that every religious Muslim is expected to observe this Eid festival who is worth at least 400 grams of gold. The festival is annually celebrated on the 10th, 11th and 12th day of the last Islamic month, Dhu al-Hijjah'' in the lunar Islamic calendar. The celebrations begin after the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide as they come down from Mount Arafat. Eid-al-Zuha is also called the "Greater Eid" as it the most significant of two Eid festivals, other being Eid-ul-Fitr. The celebrations also mark the end of annual Hajj pilgrimage to the holy town of Mecca. The festivities range from two to three days and are marked with get together, feasting, charity and gift giving. Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has declared that Eid-ul-Zuha is celebrated on September twelve. In India it has been declared by a team of noted monotheism students operating beneath the Central Ruiyat-e-Hilal Committee - Hyderabad Deccan. In Arabic "Eid" refers to a holiday and "Zuha" is a reference to sacrifice. Hence, Eid-al-Zuha means a holiday of sacrifice or more precisely, a festival of sacrifice. The festival is also commonly called "Bakrid" in Indian sub continent, given to the sacrifice of "Bakra"- Hindi word referring to a male goat. Eid-al-Zuha is also reverently celebrated in shrines and mosques by the Indian Muslim community. Despite from having religious significance the festival also has communal significance. Muslims celebrating the festival invite their non Muslim friends for feast. This custom is very much followed in secular democracies like India, United Kingdom and United States of America. Eid Ul Zuha is a great occasion for the Muslims as they consider this day as holy as their holy text Quran was considered to be complete. This is also the time when the religious Muslims undertake the holy pilgrimage to Mecca, also known as the Hajj. |
