Shameless abuse of Art 370: Governor's administration exposes NC, PDP, Cong for denying rights to Gujjars, OBCs | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sep 3: Governor's administration has exposed supporters of Article 370 who have shamelessly abused this article to deprive weaker sections, especially Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) of their democratic and constitutional rights. For the last so many years mainstream political parties of J&K be in NC, Congress or PDP have shamelessly misused Article 370 to deny constitutional rights to Gujjars and Bakerwals who constitute nearly 95 percent of ST population of the State. Political parties, especially NC and PDP had exploited Gujjars and Bakerwals in the name of religion but both the parties have denied political rights to tribal population under the grab of Article 370 Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are delighted over decision of Union Government to abolish Article 370 as this action will ensure reservation rights to these communities which their counterparts are getting in other parts of the country. For the last 35 years OBCs have agitating to get reservation which our community members are getting in other parts of the country but due to Article 370 the same is denied to them. Abrogation of Article 370 would clear decks for extending same reservation benefits in J&K also This large chunk of population in the State has been agitating to get 27 percent reservations as per recommendations of the Mandal Commission report but no political group in the State has so far openly supported the on-going struggle of OBCs. OBCs in J&K comprise both Hindus and Muslims but unlike other parts of the country, they are not getting reservation as per recommendations of Mandal Commission. Due to 'special status' of the State OBCs in J&K are being deprived of reservation rights like their counter-parts in other parts of the country. Not only OBCs, decision of Union Government has also rekindled ray of hope among STs to get political reservation. Move of the Union Government has cleared hurdles for granting political reservation to STs. Successive state governments have deprived STs of their constitutional rights. Adecades long struggle ST status was granted tribes of J&K in the year 1991 when the State was under the Governor's rule but after that every democratic elected government of the J&K have betrayed STs. |
