Two month long unrest takes toll on development activities in Kashmir

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 8: The two month long unrest in Kashmir has cast a shadow on the developmental scenario in the valley with very few works taken up by the concerned department during the unrest period and period before that.
Sources told Early Times that the macadamization process has taken a hit in the Kashmir valley since August 5. They said that since autumn has already set in it is virtually impossible that roads would be macadamized in the valley now.
"The ideal time for macadamizing the roads in Kashmir is between June and September. Since we have passed this time frame it would not be possible to carry out this all important activity on the Kashmir roads. This would mean Kashmir would lag behind on the developmental scene," said sources.
Sources said that although the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department has issued tender notices in the local newspapers for macadamizing the roads in Kashmir the plan is all set to fail given the present weather conditions. The chill has already started to spell its impact and it would be difficult to macadamize the roads.
"Across the length and breadth of the valley the roads in dilapidated condition and same could have been improved with macadamization. Given the fact that there has been an inordinate delay in macadamizing the roads the road network is in shambles in the Kashmir valley," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here over the past few weeks the R&B department invited tenders for carrying out various road related activities in the different districts of Kashmir. Since the mobility of people is restricted it is quite possible that the tenders would see a poor response thus affecting the development.
"As the public transport continues to be off the roads there are maximum chances that macadamization would not take off in the Kashmir valley for this year. At the same time due to the internet gag it would be impossible for the contractors to apply for the tenders and as such people would be ultimate sufferers," said sources.
Sources said that the inclement weather over the past few days has aggravated the matters and as such the development of roads in Kashmir would not take place. They said that as the day temperature has gone down by many degrees in the valley over the past few days the macadamization would not be done on valley roads for 2019.
"The people of Kashmir would have to face the brunt on account of bad roads for many more months. One can hope that things might improve in the next year or so provided the political situation is fit for the same. In other words the common masses would continue to suffer," said sources.
