Quest for artificial limbs drains out maimed landmine victims | `Admin reluctant to process compensation cases' | | Early Times Report poonch/rajouri, Oct 15: After losing limbs in landmine blasts in along loC in Poonch and Rajouri districts, the victims have been left to fend for themselves. They find nobody to fall back upon and their families have to sleep with an empty stomach very often. Pertinent to mention the Indian and Pakistani armies have extensively planted landmines in their respective areas along the LoC to prevent infiltration. However, the infiltrators and smugglers cross the borders easily, the civilian mostly farmers fall victim to these deadly devices. Similarly the people of the twin districts living along the LoC work with the army as porters also fall victim to these landmines. And, once the accident happens, the victim finds nobody around. Most of the victims with amputated limbs are found in Mendhar, Balakote, Manlite, Gulpir and Mandi in Poonch district. The story from forward areas in Rajouri district is not too different. The irony, said a victim is that the sufferers find it difficult to get their compensation cases processed in the respective offices in the twin districts. The persons disabled by landmines move from pillar to post in search of artificial limbs. Some of the persons even reach Srinagar NGOs for help, he said. The victims have pinned hopes on the Governor administration for speedy disposal of the pending compensation cases. |
