Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 18: After keeping the market buzzing post Article 370 removal, the authorities on Monday told the street vendors at Lal Chowk to windup the market stating "returning of normalcy" and asked to come only on Sunday.
The Kashmir valley has been witnessing uncertainty since August 5; the day centre abrogated the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and abrogated the region into two separate union territories. While as few weeks after the cenre revoked special status few shopkeepers and street vendors had setup stalls at traditional Sunday market and were running the business establishment whole week without any trouble.
The market was seen busy despite threats by the hardcore elements. However on Monday morning when street vendors were seen setting up their stalls, the authorities told them to wind up the market stating "normalcy had returned to the valley". "From last two months, I have been coming here and selling essential items and have been earning my livelihood. But today were told to move out from here and shift to shops. We don't own any shops. Now we have to look for other options", said Javaid Malik, who used to sell blankets at Sunday market.
There were threats on running business on our shops after the centre abrogated special status of Jammu and Kashmir and we found Sunday market best option to do any kind of business activity, said Bhat, another street vendor. It was the Sunday market which used to run daily from last two months which helped many people like me to earn daily living when there were threats for shopkeepers and for other business establishment, Bhat added.
Meanwhile, the customers were left disappointed on Monday in absence of daily market at Lal Chowk. "I had come here to buy essential items for my family but I was shocked to see that no was one here in the market which has been buzzing daily from last two months", said Shuaib. He added that the market was best place to buy any essential items in the time when there is an uncertainty prevailing in the valley. Now we have to look for other markets to buy essential items.
