Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 19: Undue delay in taking decision over fixation of Road Token Tax slab for the renewal of registration certificates of vehicles whose life got expired, by the Finance and Transport Department, thousands of the vehicles have become worthless.
Sources told Early Times that the Government had issued a SRO- 492 nearly three months ago wherein it was directed to collect token tax from all motor vehicles those who will use public road @9% from August 1, 2019.
"However nothing was decided/ mentioned regarding the slab of token tax to be charged from the vehicles owners of private cars for renewal of registration certificate after the expiry of 15 years of life of their vehicles," they said.
They further said that the decision has to be taken by the Finance and Transport Department collectively but it has been more than three months since the SRO was issued, former failed to take call on it due to which there is no provision, rules have been framed about the such vehicles as no tax slab has been fixed which has to be charged from the people.
"The official software of the department, in which entries are made for renewal of expired vehicles has not been showing option making unable to the registering authority to get these vehicles registered as a result the general public is at the receiving end," they said.
They further said that earlier, Transport department used to charge Rs 6000 as one time token tax but with the new Motor Vehicle Amendments 2019 now the slab has been fixed @9% of the total cast of the vehicle but in all these, the rules don't speak of the renewal of the vehicles which have expired as it has to be decided by the State government but due to apathetic attitude of the concerned department, owners of thousands of vehicles suffering a lot.
