Third Front in tatters as Govt rejects 371 extension to UT | Its over for dreamers! | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 16: With government refuting any report of extending Article 371 to Jammu and Kashmir, the chances of third front being floated by various political leaders seem bleak with their future becoming uncertain. The government on December 15 clarified that there is no proposal under consideration regarding extension of Article 371 to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The spokesman said that media reports circulating in this regard are baseless and without any substance. The same has also been refuted by Ministry of Home Affairs as well, the spokesman added. Meanwhile, the refutation is nothing less than opening up of the can of worms for those Kashmir based politicians who were waiting in wings to float third front and demand extension of Article 371 to Jammu and Kashmir. The top most voice expressing his readiness to form the third front for the demand of Article 371 was PDP Patron Muzaffar Hussain Beigh who in open had stated in the past that he would be ready to hold consultations with leaders of other political groups to evolve consensus on the demand for 371 extension to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Speculation till last week were rife that the situation is all set to take a drastic turn with senior as well as the middle rung members of various political groups are going to come together and float a third front. Muzaffar Beigh, as per the speculations is going to be a galvanising force in the entire development, taking a centre stage to steer the ship himself. "The main point of focus is going o be the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir that was downgraded to a mere union territory. There will also be a stern demand for the protection of the people of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 371. The several leaders of Congress, NC and the PDP have already started parleys and you will witness a major development in near future," sources divulged. Earlier, this year, there were speculations earlier rife that Beigh who has been one of the founding members of the PDP will join PC and announce its departure from PDP in which he spent around 19 years since 1999. Beigh last year in December last year had said that he was sidelined even when PDP and BJP stitched a common ground after the 2014 polls threw a fragmented mandate in the state. After around three months of deliberations, PDP formed alliance with the BJP and signed agenda of alliance that both the parties termed as a 'guiding principle' of running a coalition government in the state. "I was completely sidelined. On December 28, 2014, Mufti sahib in the presence of Mehbooba Ji had told me to get a document prepared for my preliminary negotiations with BJP. On January 1st, 2015,I was told by Mehbooba Ji that I should stay back and some other person had been chosen to speak to BJP. I don't know why they did so, but yes, I was sidelined, therefore I don't have any knowledge about the terms and conditions of the engagement with BJP," Beigh was quoted as having said in an interview. |
