Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 28: The leaders of Jammu & Kashmir unit of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) have been claiming that they represent the people of Jammu and they would take every step to restore the pride of Dogras, but on ground reality is far from truth.
The BJP despite having their own government at the centre has failed the people of Jammu region yet again. Their lack of commitment towards the people of Jammu got exposed yet again as the General Administration Department (GAD) came up with list of holidays for 2020.
The list of holidays as compiled by GAD has come as real shocker to the people of Jammu region. The birthday of Dogra icon and former king Maharaja Hari Singh has not been enlisted as a gazetted holiday in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This is despite the fact that people of Jammu identify themselves with the Maharaja and his ancestors.
Sources told Early Times that despite the attachment of people of Jammu with the Maharaja family the BJP has failed to live up to the expectations. The party has miserably failed to project the contributions made by Maharaja Hari Singh and his forefathers. This comes no less than body blow to the people of winter capital of the union territory.
It would be in place to mention here that Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday is celebrated on September 23 and the same has not been included as a holiday in the list of holidays for 2020. This is despite the claims made by BJP leaders that they will leave no stone unturned in declaring September 23 as a holiday.
“Maharaja Hari Singh played a pivotal role in accession of Jammu & Kashmir with the Union of India, but in return he has not got the due recognition. The people of Jammu have tremendous respect and regard for the Maharaja, but same is not true with majority of the political leaders of the Jammu division,” said sources.
Sources said that it is a matter of shame for BJP and its leaders that they could not ensure that Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday is declared as a gazetted holiday in Jammu & Kashmir. They said that when they could not do it in their own rule then they should not expect it to be done during the rule of some other parties.
“The BJP has been making hollow claims about the restoration of Dogra pride and same has been proved yet again. During the four and half year alliance of the party with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) very little was done for the people of Jammu. Still then the party leaders claim that they are real representatives of Jammu region,” said sources.
Sources said that the BJP leaders could have submitted a memorandum to Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu urging him to declare September 23 as a gazetted holiday in Jammu & Kashmir. They said majority of the BJP leaders are driven by their personal ego and not the rich cultural ethos of Dogras.
