Blanket of fog tightens grip, Jammu shivers as cold breaks 37-yr record; flights cancelled, normal life hit | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 31: Amid cold wave conditions, blanket of fog on Tuesday tightened grip in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory for the second consecutive day while flights were cancelled at Jammu Airport due to poor visibility and the cold weather conditions broke 40-year-old record. A blanket of fog early morning on Tuesday gripped the Jammu region thus bringing routine life to a standstill. The markets open late from scheduled timings, while vehicles were seen plying at snail's pace as preventive measure with head lights on. All government and private schools were closed on Monday for winter vacations till January 8, while the Centre Government run schools were already observing winter break from November 24. Meanwhile, an official at Jammu Airport said that due to poor visibility, no flight arrived or departed from here, adding that the passengers faced hardships due to cancellation of flights. The temperature also dipped in Jammu region due to which the harsh cold conditions have effected the life. After the cold wave in Jammu since the second week of December, now the fog has increased the problems of the people. Since Tuesday morning, the entire city of Jammu was wrapped in a thick blanket of fog. Air and rail traffic have also been affected extensively due to the fog. In Jammu, the cold has broken the record of the last 37 years as mercury here is being recorded about 10 degrees below normal. After the cold and chill, now the fog has brought normal life to a halt. According to MeT officials, after 1982, the weather has not been so cold till this year. After 1982, the temperature has not been recorded below normal for several days in the month of December. Weather experts believe that in the first week of December this year, the temperature was definitely normal, but from the second week, the temperature is continuously being recorded below normal. A weatherman on Tuesday said that the Jammu district observed minimum temperature 2.4 degree Celsius and the maximum was 10.5 degrees, which is a record. Banihal and Batote areas of Ramban district recorded minimum minus 0.6 and 0.5 degrees, respectively, and the maximum was 16.4 and 15.0, respectively. Meanwhile, Katra recorded maximum temperature 13.5 degrees and minimum 4.0 degrees, Bhaderwah recorded maximum temperature 13.0 degrees and Kathua recorded maximum 8.0 degrees and minimum was 4.0 degrees. However, chopper service to Sanji Chhat from Katra base camp also remained suspended for Vaishno Devi Pilgrims due to poor visibility in Trikuta Hills. |
