Construction of procurement Mandis in Jammu region yet to see light of day | Farmers' unending plights continue | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 31: It seems that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Administration hardly bothers to mitigate the grievances of farmers' community like previous governments as the long awaited demand of construction of procurement Mandis yet to see the light of day. Sources told Early Times that the construction of permanent procurement centres had remained long time demand of the farmers' community of Jammu region so that they can get their paddy corps on reasonable price i.e. on Minimum Support Price (MSP). They further said that as per exist practice, the procurement centres are set up in open in the field, where government agencies procure paddy crops and stock it in open and it has been observed that every years, the locations of these centres get changed due to availability of space which ultimately create problem for the farmers. "Stocking paddy in the open also prone to get spoiled due to rains which has given the thrust to the construction of permanent centers but this issue was never taken care seriously by the government," they said further, adding that at least 20 permanent procurement centres are required in Jammu region particularly in those areas where paddy corps are harvested including Kathua, Jammu, Samba etc. Although, Kissan Advisory Board had also suggested the construction of permanent procurement mandis wherein it was said that each procurement centers should be constructed in 10 kanals of land but the project has not been taken due consideration till date. Absence of permanent procurement centers, around 80% of the farmers sell their paddy crops to private businessmen at low price of nearly at Rs 800-1200 per quintal, whereas the Minimum Support Price (MSP) is Rs 1850 per quintal. |
