Govt restores SMS facility in Kashmir, says Big No to Mobile Internet in Jammu
Jammuites, silent sufferers even on New Year eve
12/31/2019 11:02:53 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 31: As the government is lifting curbs on SMS facility in Kashmir from midnight besides restoring internet to Kashmir hospitals, the authorities stoically remained mute over restoring internet services in Jammu.
Even on the eve of new year when the people in Jammu region were hopeful that the mobile internet will be restored so that they will be able to use this facility to exchange greetings with friends and relatives, the government however ruthlessly left them depressed, annoyed and anxious.
As per the reports, SMS services will start in Kashmir from 12 in the midnight after a gap of almost five months.
Addressing press conference at Jammu, principal secretary to Government, Rohit Kansal said that SMS services will start functioning again in Kashmir from 12 in the midnight. "J&K government has decided to restore the SMS services in Kashmir from today midnight. There is no official decision as to when the internet services would be restored. The issue is under active consideration of the government," Kansal said.
Meanwhile, in the entire press conference, the government spokesman didn't utter a single word about the mobile internet gag in place for the past five months in Jammu and the hardships people of the region are facing due to it.
"This is nothing but a very shameful situation for those people who used to claim representing Jammu and sought votes from people in the name of protecting interests of Jammu region. All these voices who have been voted to power by the people in Jammu have fallen silent, leaving the masses perturbed and in lurch," says a senior political leader based in Jammu.
Meanwhile, there are people who are left with no option but to keep waiting and pin hopes that the day will come when internet on their mobile phones will become functional again. "Why is Jammu not being counted anywhere. This is a fact that there is no internet in Jammu since August 5 and when authorities are admitting that people of Kashmir are facing hardships due to the gag and are even sorry about it, why are they using a different yardstick for the people of Jammu. Why can't the mobile internet be restored even now when the situation is absolutely peaceful and conducive," says a law student based in Jammu.
The mobile internet in Jammu region, besides Kashmir continues to remain blocked since August 5 this year when the government revoked Article 370 and Article 35-A. In Jammu, though in October, the low speed mobile internet was restored for a day, it was however blocked again due to unknown reasons.
According to the estimates of study, the present gag is longest ever in the history of the world with people in both the regions- Jammu as well as in Kashmir facing internet gag for more than 100 days.
