One-way traffic resumes on Kashmir highway after remaining closed for 4 days | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 5: One-way traffic resumed on Sunday on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, after remaining closed for four days due to snowfall and landslides. Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir, remained closed for the past 26 days on Sunday due to accumulation of snow and slippery road condition due to below freezing point temperature. The historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region also remained closed for the past 26 days. "After clearing the landslides at Digdol and improvement of weather conditions, one-way traffic was on Sunday morning allowed to ply from Srinagar to Jammu," a traffic police office said. Hundred of vehicles, mostly carrying passengers, stranded at various places between Qazigund to Jawahar tunnel were allowed to move towards Jammu. The vehicles were stranded in the area since Wednesday when a portion of hill collapsed at Digdol. He said fresh traffic was also allowed to move towards Jammu though vehicles were to cross Qazigund before 1100 hrs. On Friday, stranded vehicles were allowed to move towards Kashmir before fresh landslides at Digdol forced suspension of the traffic again at 2200 hrs. A driver was injured after a stone hit his vehicle at Digdol. The injured was admitted to Ramban hospital. However, other occupants escaped unhurt. However, he said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), responsible for maintenance and widening of the highway, cleared the landslides last evening at Digdol and about 6 inches of snow accumulated due to fresh snowfall. "The traffic was on Sunday morning allowed to move towards Jammu," he said. Appealing people to cooperate, he said the movement of vehicles was being suspended as a precautionary measure to avoid any accident. He requested them to contact Traffic Control Units (TCUs) at Srinagar, Jammu and Ramban before starting journey. |
