IB residents yet to get full benefits of Centre’s move | | | Jammu, Jan 5: Almost six months have been passed after Centre announced reservations for the people living on International Border (IB) but border residents have yet to take benefit of the reservation announced for them. Credible sources said that those at the helm of the affairs were not taking this issue seriously and no specific programme for the socio-economic growth of border residents has started so far in Jammu region. On June 28, a bill was passed to give reservation benefits to over 3.5 lakh International Border (IB) dwellers living in 435 villages of the plains of Jammu province. This Bill was aimed to provide reservations in educational institutions and government jobs to the people living within 10km of the IB in the Jammu region, just like those living on the Line of Control (LoC). Earlier move to give reservation benefits to IB dwellers were made in the year 2017 but the same was sabotaged by the previous coalition government headed by Mehbooba Mufti in which the BJP was equal partner. With the passing of the bill, border residents were hoping that this action of the government will change their destiny. During 2014 Lok Sabha and assembly polls in J&K the BJP had promised to extend reservations to IB but party’s own ministers in the PDP-BJP government had failed to pursue the move due to pressure from coalition partner so no initiative was taken during previous regime. It was only during Governor’s rule the step was taken. People residing near the LoC as well as the IB are equally affected by the firing from across the border and deserve equal treatment but unfortunately residents near the IB were not getting benefits such as reservation. Villagers of 70 villages of Kathua, 133 villages of Samba and 133 villages of Jammu districts are still hoping that passing of the Bill will improve their conditions.
