J&K among states with lowest crime rate in the country

Jammu, Jan 10: Though Jammu and Kashmir is always in news for violent activities such as militancy related incidents and cross border firing but there is a positive side of the story as in context of criminal cases it is among the states with lowest crime rate in the country.
As per the data furnished by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2016-2018, Jammu and Kashmir was among the states with lowest number of crime cases registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as Special and Local Laws (SLL). The SLL crimes relate to Arms Act, NDPS ACT, UAPA, Gambling Act, Excise Act, Explosives Substance Act, Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, Registration of Foreigners Act and Dowry Prohibition Act.
In case of IPC (cognizable crimes), the crime rate per lakh population in Jammu and Kashmir accounted for only 180.4, while the highest crime rate per lakh population was recorded in Kerala which was 534.1. The lowest crime rate per lakh population was recorded in Nagaland with merely 57.3, while other north eastern states have also recorded low rates ranging from 100 to 150. The national average crime rate per lakh population has been recorded as 236.7 and J&K falls far below the average.
In case of Special and Local Laws (SLL) crime cases, the crime rate per lakh population in Jammu and Kashmir was 22.8, whereas the national average rate of SLL cases, has been recorded as 146.7. Kerala topped the list with 929.1 cases per lakh of population, while Arunachal Pradesh recorded lowest rate with 13.7.
Moreover in case of IPC and SLL crime cases, the crime rate per lakh population in Jammu and Kashmir has been recorded as 203.1, while the national average crime rate has been recorded as 383.5. Nagaland has recorded lowest crime rate per lakh population and it stood at 83.2. The neighbouring states to Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab has crime rate of 236.8, while Himachal Pradesh has 269.6. Jammu and Kashmir is among the states with lowest crime cases recorded, while other north Indian states have high crime rate.
